Alan Trott

Alan TrottI was injured on the 21st November in 1964; but it wasn't until three days later that I went into hospital, I was playing for Dewsbury Celtic A.R.L.C against Lock Lane of Castleford A.R.L.C. we were playing in the fourth round of a competition to see who would play a professional club in the first round of the Challenge Cup.

My injury
occurred just three months after we were married and just three days before my 22nd birthday I was in Pinderfields Hospital six months and Dewsbury Hospital a further three and a half months the accident took my speech, my balance and my co-ordination they suspected brain damage.

I can remember being tackled about 12 meters from their line. I was getting up when somebody came in with a knee to the side of my head and I passed out for about 1 minute, after I came round I felt ok so I played the rest of the game.

ALAN & MARGARET with TOM VAN VOLLENHOVEN IN 1967It was not until the early hours of Wednesday Morning that I Started feeling dizzy and sickly I crawled out of bed and was sick two or three times I then tried to stand up but I couldn't, so it was on the Wednesday that I went into hospital. First they took me to Dewsbury hospital but they couldn't do anything for me there so they then took
me to Pinderfields where I stayed six months before being transferred back to Dewsbury for a further three months before I was then allowed to come home in September of 1965

Alan and Sam MortonMargaret & Myself have been married now for forty five years through all that time Margaret has been there for me supporting and encouraging me through all the rough times and now the smooth times also I would like to thank the men of Dewsbury Celtic Amateur Rugby Club have been there for me from the beginning of 1966 fund raising and taking me out. Personally I would like to thank Sam Morton who has been a wonderful friend, helping & supporting me and Margaret, also I would like to thank Terry Dewhurst I have been supported by so many wonderful rugby players both past & present during the past four years we have been helped by The R.F.L. Benevolent Fund.

We were contacted by David Phillips who is the Fund Liaison Officer of helping us personally & financially which as enabled us to have a scooter for the car, ( no need for Margaret to push me around in a wheelchair) Washing Machine, Vacuum, Digital T.V, Large Garden Shed, Fencing & Gates, which without their help we would not have had, it would have taken many years for us to have saved up for them, if at all, so we are very grateful to the R.F.L. Benevolent Fund, it makes us feel very humble & thankful for the things that they have done for us.
